“Melatonin is known as the 'sleep hormone' - its level rises at night and stimulates sleep. This hormone does not accumulate in the body, it is synthesized and consumed every day. You can increase the melatonin content throughout the day with the help of almonds, walnuts, kiwi, bananas, cherries, dairy products in the form of skim milk, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, oily fish - salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, turkey, white rice and oatmeal ", - said Danchenko.

The doctor also listed foods that should not be consumed before bedtime.

“There are a number of foods to avoid if you are getting ready for bed. Grapefruits, tomatoes, raw onions, and spicy foods can cause heartburn. Coffee, green tea, and chocolate contain caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system and keeps you awake. Fast food contains a large amount of fat, which takes a long time to digest and thus does not give your body a rest, moreover, fatty foods often cause diarrhea and bloating. Dried fruits in large quantities can also cause digestive upset. Ice cream contains a lot of easily digestible carbohydrates, which raise insulin levels and thus prevent you from falling asleep. Alcoholic drinks cause dehydration of the body and nighttime awakenings,”said Milena Danchenko.
