Human skin is one of the most amazing organs! It performs a protective function, protecting the body from negative external influences and the penetration of infections, helps regulate body temperature and participates in the breathing process.

It is home to over 1000 species of bacteria! At the same time, its minimum thickness - on the eyelids, is only 0.02 mm and the maximum - on the soles of the legs - 1.4 mm.

The skin consists of 300 million cells, that is, almost 19 million for every square centimeter. At the same time, she is endowed with the ability to self-renew. The skin completely changes after 28 days. In order to renew itself, it exfoliates dead cells, with which it parts rapidly - up to 40 thousand cells per minute! The average person loses about 9 kilograms of dead cells per year.

To help the skin stay young, healthy and beautiful for longer, you need a washing procedure. And paradoxically, many people misbehave, making typical mistakes.

You miss your morning routine

Washing your face in the morning is just as important as before bed. And it must be carried out according to all the rules. It is not enough to simply wipe your skin with tonic or lotion, without water you will not be able to wash off the natural secretions of the sebaceous glands, as well as the remains of cosmetics that you applied before bedtime (for example, cream or serum). “And most importantly, if you skip your morning skin cleansing procedure, the applied sunscreen will not be able to absorb well, thereby providing you with protection from UV radiation,” says star cosmetologist Rene Rouleau.

Buying the wrong products

An improperly selected cleanser reduces the effectiveness of all subsequent products applied, not to mention the fact that it can provoke skin irritation and contribute to the occurrence of allergic reactions.

People with dry to normal skin should opt for moisturizing, creamy textures. And for those who have oily or combination skin, wash foams and gels are suitable. Try to buy sulfate-free products, they are less harsh and do not damage the skin.

Expert commentary Lyubov Akrum, plastic surgeon, cosmetologist

I want to share with you my experience in terms of the selection of products for washing. To date, there is no shortage of these funds on store shelves. Eyes run up, and we in confusion can wait for the advice of the seller, if there is no beautician who will recommend a suitable remedy.

Most importantly, the product must cleanse thoroughly. But at the same time, waterproof cosmetics must be washed off beforehand, since ordinary "washers" may not cope with it.

It is necessary to understand the type of skin to which the "wash" is selected. Oily skin requires acids in its composition. And the presence of oils is typical for dry skin. Thus, we can conclude: it is necessary to pay attention to the composition of the funds.

Manufacturers use different ingredients. And there are substances that it is advisable to avoid, and carefully read the composition of the cleanser. So, you need to exclude:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Sodium Myreth Sulfate (SMS), Mineral oil.

Mild cleansing agents are desirable:

Coco-Betaine - Coco-Betaine, Cocamidopropyl Betaine - Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside - Coco-Glucoside, Caprylyl / Capryl Glucoside - Carpylyl / Capryl Glucoside, Glycolic Acid - Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid - Lactic Acid - Salicylic Acid - Salicylic Acid Natural oils.

By following these simple rules, many problems such as dryness, irritation, inflammation, clogged pores can be avoided.

Apply makeup incorrectly

Different textures of products are applied differently! If you are using cleansing lotions, milk or cream for washing, or oils, apply them to completely dry skin - lightly, while massage. “This allows the nourishing ingredients of cosmetics to penetrate into the skin, moisturize and nourish it,” shares Rene Rouleau's experience. After that, the cosmetics are washed off with plain water.

But gels, foams for washing and soaps are applied to pre-moistened skin and left on it for 1-1.5 minutes. “If the product contains antibacterial substances, they will have time to suppress the growth of bacteria and thereby prevent the emergence of new foci of inflammation,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, associate professor of dermatology.

If you suffer from dermatological diseases, avoid using towels. In addition to the fact that they can be quite tough and thereby damage the skin, they must be changed daily, otherwise inflammation on the face cannot be avoided. A convenient alternative is disposable paper towels. Just dab your face with them after washing.

Choosing a dangerous temperature regime

Someone uses ice water, believing that it tones and soothes the skin, another in an effort to open the pores and squeeze the maximum out of them the secret - very hot, which leads to overdrying and accelerating the aging process. The heat dilates the blood vessels under the skin, making you look red, hot. “If you also suffer from acne or rosacea, it will lead to the appearance of persistent rashes,” sums up the cosmetologist Rene Rouleau. The ideal temperature of water for washing for all skin types is 35-36C.

You wash only once in the evening

An evening washing procedure for women should consist of two stages: removing makeup and directly cleansing the skin. And both procedures are required! The use of decorative cosmetics - foundation, powder and blush, as well as mascara and eyebrow, requires careful make-up removal with the help of special means - hydrophilic oil or micellar water that can cope with waterproof makeup.

At the end of the first stage, you need to start cleansing the skin with gel, washing foam or milk to wash off impurities and refresh the skin. No matter how tired you are, do not skip both stages of the evening procedure!

Expert commentary Sona Kocharova, dermatocosmetologist

One of the basic rules: do not wash too often or too rarely. The optimal amount is twice a day: in the morning and in the evening.

Washing your face too often can damage the protective layer of your skin. It is imperative to wash off cosmetics before going to bed, it is best to do this with special means, especially carefully you need to remove cosmetics from the eye area - the delicate periorbital zone is especially sensitive to any external influences.

Suitable for removing cosmetics: milk, micellar water, oily eye makeup remover. No need to rub your eyes and skin with force: thanks to specialized products, even waterproof cosmetics can be removed easily. The water temperature should be warm, room temperature, but if you have enlarged pores, you can wash your face with slightly cool water, the main thing is not to overdo it.

After removing cosmetics, the skin should be treated according to its type. It is best to get recommendations from a dermatologist, as he will be able to take into account all the nuances inherent in you. For example, for oily skin, it is better to use mousses or gels with antibacterial properties. But, if you have combination skin, chances are that you could dry out your cheeks, so look for a “combination” approach. Mousses and foams are great for dry skin. After washing, you need to wipe the skin with a suitable milk and / or tonic, then apply the cream.

Using too many funds

The more cosmetics for washing, the worse. Experts came to this conclusion. The skin cleansing procedure should be thorough, but very gentle. You need to wash your face with cleansers every day, and use cosmetics to exfoliate your skin - a maximum of two times a week.

Scrubs, gommages and acid peels should ideally be prescribed by a cosmetologist in order to select the optimal composition of preparations and determine the need for their use. Skin cleansing devices such as brushes should only be used on the advice of a physician.

Never use a cleansing sponge with a scrub or exfoliation! “Even slight irritation from friction and aggressive exfoliants can lead to hyperpigmentation - the appearance of dark, persistent patches on the skin,” warns Joshua Zeichner.

Save water too much

Insufficient rinsing of the face is the most common cause of clogged pores and, as a result, the appearance of blackheads and inflammation on the skin. The least attention is paid to the skin at the border of the hairline, along the chin and at the temples, on the wings of the nose. Don't forget to take care of them, and your face will look young and fresh!

Forgetting to change products

Using the same face wash products over a long period of time can cause unpleasant "side effects" and do more harm than good. Especially if the product has antibacterial properties, dries and mattes.

In addition, cosmetics have different requirements at different times of the year. Therefore, try to change your cleansing products every season and then you will get the best results!

Wait before applying makeup

If your skin becomes drier and more sensitive after washing, you may be breaking the 60 second rule. “After a cleansing session, apply a serum or cream to the skin for a minute. The water simply rinses out and does not moisturize the skin, as the moisture begins to evaporate instantly. By applying cosmetics immediately after cleansing, you not only get all the benefits of beauty products, but also seal the moisture that you received during washing inside the skin. And this has a beneficial effect on her health and appearance,”says Joshua Zeichner, MD.

Do not consider makeup remover wipes as an alternative to washing your face. They can help remove makeup, but they won't cleanse the skin thoroughly. After using them, rinse your face as soon as possible. When using wipes, try not to stretch the skin, avoid excessive friction and the skin will say "thank you!"

Expert commentary Maria Gavrilova, dermatovenerologist, member of the European and Spanish Academies of Dermatology

When we wash, we wash away makeup, pollution from the environment, sweat and sebum production accumulated during the day. Improper face cleansing or the wrong choice of cleanser can cause dryness, irritation and even acne. In many cases, it is enough to change the ritual of washing to restore the healthy appearance of the skin.

How do cleansers work?

Modern cleaning products use synthetic cleaners or surfactants (surfactants). Surfactant molecules are composed of fat-soluble and water-soluble parts that form microparticles or micelles. Micelles separate large substances (such as dirt and grease) into small ones and can then easily remove them from the skin. This process works best with contact with warm water close to body temperature.Remember, a small amount of cleanser is enough to cleanse your skin.

It is better not to use regular soaps, as their alkaline substances increase the pH of the skin, causing dryness and irritation.

How many times a day do you need to cleanse your skin?

If your skin is not very oily, then once is enough. Cleanse your skin in the evening to remove any dirt that has accumulated during the day. In the morning, washing with cool water is enough to give your skin a fresher look and help you wake up.

How do I choose a cleanser for my skin?

If your skin is prone to dryness, then choose a cleanser with less aggressive surfactants (polisorbate 85 or 60, cocamidropropyl betaine, caprilyc acid) and make sure that moisturizing ingredients (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, oils) are added. Choose products for cleansing in the form of milk, cream or oil.

If your skin tends to be greasy, you can use cleansers with stronger surfactants (sodium lauryl sulafte) or added salicylic acid to better exfoliate dead skin cells. For oily skin, it is better to use products in the form of gels or foams.

Micellar solutions with anti-inflammatory ingredients (chamomile, aloe vera or allantoin) are excellent for cleansing sensitive skin. I recommend that patients with sensitive skin test the new product on their wrists before applying to their face. If redness or irritation does not occur, then the remedy is right for you.

To remove eye make-up, use mild products with moisturizing ingredients, since the skin around the eyes is thinner and has fewer sebaceous glands, excessive cleansing can cause irritation and dryness. Cleanse your skin with gentle strokes without rubbing.

After washing your face, use a towel to pat dry your face. Do not rub hard, as this irritates the skin and stimulates the appearance of wrinkles.

If after cleansing the skin you do not feel tightness, do not see redness, and instead of feeling a sticky film on the skin, you experience a pleasant sensation of cleanliness, then the cleansing agent is selected correctly.

- How to wash properly?

It is important to know what your skin type is. If the skin is normal or dry, there is no makeup and creams, then water at room temperature is enough for washing, not too hot and not too cold - the golden mean. For oily skin, water is often not enough to remove sebum, so you can use soap, preferably baby, so that there is no irritation and excessive dryness of the skin.

If you have makeup on your face, thoroughly cleanse the skin with milk before washing, preferably for sensitive skin, which contains a minimum of irritating substances, including preservatives, and then wash with water. For those with oily skin, it is possible to use a cleansing milk with herbal extracts that have anti-inflammatory effects.

Do not forget to wash your face well, remove accumulated bacteria, exfoliated cells of the epidermis from the skin so that it breathes.

Don't rub your face with a towel, blot it gently and apply the cream to your wet face to help it go deeper.

Do not use harsh facial belongings, especially those with bones. They cause microdamage to the epidermis, the upper layer of the skin and destroy the hydrolipid barrier that protects the skin from aggressive environmental influences. Also, avoid using peels at home, you will get dry skin and, as a result, high risks of hyperpigmentation.

Do not forget to wash your hands before washing. do not clean your face with dirty hands.

You need to wash your face twice a day: in the morning and in the evening. Sebum is secreted during the night, bacteria multiply, all this must be removed in the morning. Remember to change your face towels at least twice a week, preferably every other day

Be careful when choosing cleansers that contain dyes, fragrances, preservatives, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, which are often the cause of allergic reactions.

Expert commentary Zoya Aleksandrovna Evsyukova, head of the department of cosmetology and dermatovenerology, polyclinic of the Russian State Social University, cosmetologist, dermatovenerologist

Our skin is designed in such a way that it is covered with a hydrolipid mantle, which protects it from water loss (and not only) from the inside, as well as from the penetration of bacteria and other negative environmental factors from the outside. These lipids are very important and only proper cleansing maintains the hydrolipidic balance.

You probably noticed that washing with high pH products (soaps, gels) leads to the fact that the skin after washing tightens, it becomes matte, and this is good if the skin is oily, prone to rashes, but if it is left in this (alkalized form), then in 30-40 minutes it will “fatten” itself and will start to shine treacherously again. Therefore, after washing, it is imperative to use a tonic that returns the pH of the skin to its norm (5-5.5). The same applies to dry skin, which it is advisable to wash with gentle foams, milk containing oils, not alkalis. But here, too, a tonic is needed: it will remove the remaining oils, relieve irritation.

By the way, liquid soaps contain sodium, and solid soaps contain potassium. Sodium dehydrates the skin more than potassium. For example, I only wash my hands at home with solid soap. Some cosmetic brands have solid soaps for the skin of the face in their lines, which is a clear advantage over liquid forms.

Now an important point: if you want your "wash" to work at least a little for the benefit of the skin, hold it on your face for at least a couple of minutes. I apply my wash gel to my face, and then proceed to a thorough brushing of my teeth, and only after that I rinse off the wash gel. After this stage, you can apply all kinds of scrubs, again: hold it on the skin for a few minutes, and then roll it up with massage movements, slightly moistened with your fingers. After such a roll, you can wash off the scrub without a twinge of conscience. Well, the third stage of cleansing: tonic or alcohol-free lotion.

All beauty and health!
