The head of the Pain Clinic of the First City Hospital, a neurologist, Yekaterina Abramova, spoke about the origin and methods of treating phantom pain, according to the Argumenty i Fakty website.

She noted that most often such discomfort occurs after amputation of a limb, as the brain continues to remember that there is a missing part. Abramova emphasized that phantom pains appear in 50-80% of people who have undergone cutting off a limb.

The causes of sensations from a non-existent part of the body are trauma, emergency surgery, or insufficient amount of pain reliever during surgery. The sources of phantom pain Abramova named neuromas that remain after amputation and generate nerve impulses.

The second common source of sensations from a non-existent part of the body is the spinal cord and brain. Their system captures the feeling of pain and transfers it to the structures of the central nervous system, which are responsible for "processing" pain. Thus, according to Abramova, a "habit" of feeling pain is formed.

The source of the unpleasant feeling can only be determined using ultrasound in the case of a neuroma and MRI in the case of the brain. As for the methods of treatment, drugs that act directly on the central nervous system are often used.

Also, experts practice the exercise when a person sees his cut off limb and tries to "control" it. So the patient, as it were, deceives his brain, convincing him that a non-existent part of the body is absolutely healthy. As a rule, after such therapy, the pain begins to go away.

Earlier, allergist-immunologist Aleksey Bessmertny spoke about the dangers of frequent hand washing with soap. He noted that overuse of this dries out the skin and washes away the protective layer of beneficial bacteria from it.
