A team of US researchers have found that eating a healthy diet can reduce the risk of age-related hearing loss. Earlier it was believed that deafness is an inevitable companion of aging, according to MedicalXpress.

Scientists report a proven reduction in the risk of hearing loss with age with three dietary choices that follow a healthy diet. This is the so-called DASH-diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), a variation of the Mediterranean diet and a diet called AHEI-2010 (Alternate Healthy Index), which includes a high intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains. The research results are published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The large-scale study covered more than 20 years. It was attended only by women who had to report on their diet every 4 years, starting in 1991. The participants were examined by professional audiologists, comparing the data on changes in their hearing with the diet. The risk of decreased sensitivity of the auditory system was 30 percent lower in those participants who adhered to the principles of a healthy diet.

- The link between diet and hearing loss can be seen at frequencies that are critical to understanding speech. We were surprised how many participants demonstrated hearing loss throughout the experiment,”explained one of the study's authors, Dr. Sharon Kurhan.
